Create a Puzzle Game Other Kids Can Play

By designing it and then proving it works. Your kid invents a small crew of characters, gives each one a single power — push crates, hover over pits, hack doors, spark past lasers — and builds grid levels that can only be solved by combining those powers. A built-in solver has to prove a level is beatable before it can ship, and then other Kubrio kids play the finished game in the internal gallery and post scores.

What your kid actually makes

A puzzle game other kids play. Your kid names it, picks a setting — Deep Space, Ocean Depths, Lost Temple or Cyber City — invents a small cast, and gives each character one gameplay power. Then they build the levels in a grid editor: walls, crates, pits, buttons, doors, lasers and crystals, laid out so the only way through is combining the crew's powers. The finished game lives in their portfolio and launches into the internal Kubrio gallery.

How a sitting goes

Several sittings, and the loop is the point. Build a level, play your own level, read the test report, then fix what was too hard, too easy or impossible. Before anything can ship, a solver checks the level and proves it can actually be won; if it cannot, your kid goes back in and repairs it. Most kids keep tightening a game long after it already works.

What AI does — and what your kid does

The AI is the art department. It draws the character sprites and the box art, in an enforced child-safe style, and nothing else. Which characters exist, what each one can do, where every wall and crate goes and how the difficulty ramps are all your kid's design. The solver is not creative either — it only checks their work, so a broken puzzle never reaches another kid.

What they're really learning

Systems thinking without syntax: powers, triggers and cause-and-effect, which is the thinking underneath programming, with no code to type. And the designer's discipline — a level is not finished because it is hard, it is finished because it is fair and somebody else can actually complete it.

Good to know

  • "Other kids" means other Kubrio families, inside the internal gallery — not the open web. Sharing a game beyond Kubrio stays a separate, deliberate step, and you can pull a game from the gallery yourself.
  • Younger kids build shorter levels around one or two powers; older kids design longer games and tighter difficulty curves.
  • A published game is evidence the levels work: the solver would not let it out otherwise.
