Halloween door decorating ideas kids make themselves

A big, silly monster that guards your door: paper skin, paper-plate eyes, and the handle as its nose.

Free3 lessons2 minutesWith Krea

To decorate a door for Halloween, your kid plans it as a giant face: eyes up top, a big mouth below, and the handle as the nose. Then your kid makes paper-plate eyes and a grin with paper teeth, and puts it all up with painter's tape. A grown-up does the high parts. On this page, three free Kubrio films with Krea show each step.

Your turn!

Draw your door monster on paper. Then pick its skin color.

What the film says (Lesson 1 of 3)
  1. Hi, I'm Krea! Today your door turns into a monster. A big, silly monster that guards your room!

  2. A door is tall, like a giant face. Eyes up here. A big mouth down there.

  3. And the door handle? It can be the nose. Or the tip of a long, wiggly tongue!

  4. Plan it on paper first. Draw a tall rectangle, and put your monster's face inside.

  5. Now pick a skin color. Use big paper, wrapping paper, or a plastic tablecloth.

  6. Ask a grown-up which door you can use. A bedroom door works too!

  7. Your turn. Draw your door monster on paper. Then pick its skin color.

    2. 0:05

Grab two paper plates. Color a big circle in the middle, then a dark dot. Monster eyes!

Skin first. A grown-up does the high parts. You do the low parts.

    6. 0:30

Now stand next to your monster, and take a family photo. Everybody say, Boo!

What your kid makes

A monster door with paper-plate eyes, a grin with teeth, and a "Knock if you dare!" sign.

What you need

  • Big paper, wrapping paper, or a plastic tablecloth
  • Paper plates
  • Dark and white paper
  • Kid scissors and glue
  • Painter's tape

Questions parents ask

Will it damage the door?

Use painter's tape. It holds paper well and peels off cleanly after Halloween.

Which door works best?

Any door. Ask a grown-up which one to use: the front door, or a bedroom door if the front door is shared.

What does the grown-up do?

The high parts. Your kid plans the monster, cuts the eyes and teeth, and tapes up everything they can reach.
