Make: The Chase Game

Controls, a chase and a win rule. Build the whole game — then make it fair.

Meet the plan

This is the last project, and the game is all yours. It needs three programs. One for the mouse: when you tap, step right. One for the cat: chase the mouse, for ever. And a win rule: when the mouse reaches the cheese, you win. Tap a program's name to choose which one your blocks go into.

the cat's brain — chase for ever
a wait — makes it fair

A cat that never rests always wins. A good game gives the player a chance.

See it work

Here is a finished chase game, played by a ghost finger. Read all three programs.

ExampleThe finished game

🐱

The win rule

The cat chased the whole time — but it rested between steps, so a quick finger could stay ahead. Controls, a chase, a win rule: that is a game.

Your turn

Now you're the game designer. Build all three, then play.

Chase Game: build it, balance it, beat it

Write all three programs. Then press ▶ and tap the 🐭 to the 🧀 before the 🐱 catches it.

Blocks

Go further

What if the cat never rests?

Take the ⏳ out of the cat's loop and play again. Tap as fast as you like — the cat steps every time you do, and it gets you every time. A game nobody can win is not much fun. Put the wait back, or try ⏳ 2 for an easier game. Choosing that number is game design.

For grown-ups

Tuning an opponent's speed so a game is hard but beatable is called balancing — the last and most human step of making a game, and the one that decides whether anyone wants to play it.

Where this goes

Make a game other kids can play

The blocks on this page are a first taste. In a Kubrio project your kid builds a real game — powers, triggers, levels and all — and other kids get to play it.

Ingenious projects that inspire kids to make things — until they find the thing only they could make.
