Halloween for kids Pumpkin painting ideas Night sky

Night sky painted pumpkin
Ages 6+ · about 40 minutes, plus drying
To paint a night sky pumpkin, cover it in dark blue, dab on patches of purple, then add white stars and a crescent moon. It takes about 40 minutes plus drying, and every pumpkin ends up with its own sky.
What you need
- A pumpkin, washed and dried
- Dark blue, purple, black, and white acrylic paint
- A wide brush and a small piece of sponge
- Cotton swabs
- An old toothbrush (for the splatter stars)
- Lots of newspaper
How to make it
- Paint the skyPaint the whole pumpkin dark blue. Let it dry for about 20 minutes.
- Add the cloudsDab patches of purple and a little black with the sponge. Soft, blurry edges look like space.
- Splatter tiny starsOutside or over lots of newspaper, dip the toothbrush in white paint with a few drops of water. Point it at the pumpkin and run your thumb over the bristles.
- Dot the big starsDip a cotton swab in white paint and press bigger stars here and there.
- Paint the moonDraw a crescent moon in pencil, two curves that meet at the tips, then fill it in white or yellow.
Tips by age
For younger kids
Skip the toothbrush and make every star with a cotton swab.
For older kids
Paint a real constellation, like the Big Dipper, and join its stars with thin white lines.
